Queen
Amidala’s hair is far, far and away the best thing about the new Star Wars
movie,
reports EMMA MOORE
If you thought that millennium
hair was destined to be sleek and minimal, think again. You hadn’t reckoned on
the fashion extravaganza that will hit cinema screens on July 16. Sorry to
trivialise the wonder that is the return of Star Wars, but have you seen the get-ups?
The costumes in the otherwise
appalling Star Wars prequel, The Phantom Menace, are astounding, particularly
those of Natalie Portman, whose character, Queen Amidala, required a different
hairstyle, headdress and robe design for each of her eight appearances.
Inspiration for the gravity-defying hairstyles, like the clothes, came from
various countries and periods: Japanese, Mongolian, Chinese and north African
influences are visible, but the end results are unique.
Anybody wishing to replicate
the hairstyles, however, should be warned. It took two top stylists a week to
perfect the monumental hair structures, seen here on Jodie Kidd, as well as a
truckload of hairpieces, chicken wire and hairspray, a crochet needle arid a few
choice Indian accessories from London’s Brick Lane market. Once you have got
these basics together, you’ll need some practice. Luckily, the film’s spin-off
merchandising includes a style-your-own Queen Amidala doll. Perhaps in space no
one can hear you scream, but get these hairstyles wrong and your howls will be
heard several streets away.
